[Zenyatta gives it time before he contacts Genji: time to think, to allow the dust to settle amongst his grievances, time for self-reflection. He is at least calmer now, if no clearer on his own feelings.]
What do you make of Hanzo's business plans?
[He knows his student is aware of them, at least. He saw his username in the comments. If Zenyatta sounds a little cautious it is only because he knows Genji will likely have heard his own thoughts on the matter.]
[ ah, he can say he expected this at some point. he's aware of zenyatta's misgivings on the matter, as well as his own. he tries to answer honestly. ]
I cannot say it sits perfectly well with me, but I have never wanted for Chroma in this place, or companionship.
These are... the kind of businesses he and I grew up around. There will always be a market for a quick, casual encounter with no feelings attached. At least in Hanzo's hands, I know no one will be forced into it.
I know. I do not believe he will be cruel or that he will not keep those around him safe. Yet I cannot bring myself to endorse something that profits from the loneliness of others.
[ his tone is gentle. such things are generally taboo to begin with, and zenyatta's concern is more for the soul that finds himself needing it.]
I think... Hanzo is making something he would have wanted to use when he first arrived, if that makes sense. Often times, you see a need for something where you first had that need yourself.
I understand. I have already spoken to a number of individuals who are not accustomed to or inclined towards intense physical contact. But I cannot see how requesting a percentage of the chroma generated in the process is anything but naked greed.
But then, why does the man who sells food from a stand request compensation? In a perfect world, no one wold want for food or water or be forced to buy them. In a sense, that is what is happening here.
Some people will moonlace, and get chroma for no cost. Others may come to my brother's business, and request to moonlace with someone for a percentage of the chroma generated. They do not have to seek out, care for, or court a partner, and they do not have to spend extended time with someone they do not care about.
It is not how I would go about things. I prefer to make those experiences special.
You are correct, my student, but your analogy is imperfect. A man who sells food has unavoidably expended time, expense and energy in its production. Theoretically, this is balanced by the price paid by his clientele for its purchase.
[Genji can practically hear him settling into place, warming into his more teacherly disposition more and more with every word.]
What Hanzo proposes is not an equal trade. Both parties generate what is presumably an equal quantity of chroma by moonlacing already- why should one party be asked to pay a premium for the privilege? If an individual is starved for contact and cannot seek it through regular means for whatever reason, is there any reason why a willing party should not agree to aid them without requesting some of that chroma?
And in a perfect world, a brothel would not exist.
[ genji sighs a little bit. ]
If they can find a willing party agreeing to aid them, then they would have no need of Hanzo's services. And there are many people, such as myself, who would do that. I ... do not think that is Hanzo's intended clientele.
I think they are more people like Hanzo himself, who may have little interest in garnering personal connections in order to moonlace. Certainly, the person in your scenario may make use of it as well, but it is not as if Hanzo is going to drive off those offering free services. He's not a pimp protecting his spot on the street.
I am not suggesting that he would- and when I say willing, I mean one willing to be intimate with a stranger, without requiring any level of emotional intimacy. Why should they seek profit, when they will already be reaping their own rewards? It is not conscionable.
[But Genji does raise an interesting question.]
If he is not a pimp, then how would you describe his proposed role?
As an owner, most likely a manager with added security. He handles the funds that keep the business going. He's explained the model he has in mind - a flat fee paid to him, up front, for the room they'd keep in the brothel.
Any money they make after that fee is paid goes directly to them, not through Hanzo. And the fee that's incurred to the clients goes to the employees, that 10% off the top. They have the benefit of security and a room that is not their house to moonlace in.
And of course, only people willing to work there. He is not looking to recreate the yakuza brothels of old.
[ genji gives a small shrug that zenyatta cannot see. ]
As I have said, I agree with you in the theory that we should be able to moonlace with each other without expectations. But some people are reluctant even then - and brothels already exist down in lower Lunatia, so there is a market.
Of course- I have never once said that I thought he would be unkind in his position. [He does not believe he would be, though he has no way of knowing what Hanzo was like as a clan leader, in his old life.] But what you describe, regardless of negative connotations with the word, is a kind of pimp.
[Which is more an interesting observation than anything else, and, given Genji's reluctance to use the word, perhaps a little telling.
He pauses.]
I do not believe we shall come to an agreement on the matter. My issue is with that ten percent. I would understand if the entirety of it went into maintenance and security, but I cannot approve of making a profit.
[ even if he does not agree, and he thinks leaving it alone is the best point. he's already seen what hanzo suggested to zenyatta, by this point - that he offer himself, and that zenyatta may do that.
he has no issue with that. it fits his master's giving nature, and he knows him well enough to know this is not out of spite. ]
We shall have to agree to disagree on the matter. [ ... and because he knows that they would not leave it on a sour note, ] I do appreciate you speaking to me of this. How have you been doing? It has been some time since our paths met up.
[It would not be the first time. Genji would not be such an excellent student, nor Zenyatta such a successful teacher, were they not able to compromise.
That does not make it any happier, however, when they do disagree, or any less of a relief to change the subject.]
Well enough. I have missed you, though- it seems that we only meet to discuss your brother. [There's an obvious guilty tinge in his voice.] I am sorry I never had the opportunity to meet your hatchling.
I will not say that is not true, but it is up to us to change that. [ when zenyatta mentions the hatchling, he brightens. ] I have a lot of pictures of her! And video. I know it is not the same, but I would be glad to show you some time.
We should meditate together and talk a walk. And not speak of my brother.
[alright, maybe that was somewhat of a previous statement to make, but-]
It is scarcely a confession! [Genji should be able to hear the embarrassment that comes flickering into his voice, though it may sound alien to him- when was the last time he heard Zenyatta sound self-conscious?] But-- your brother has made it clear that he does not think our differences insurmountable. That is all.
[ scarcely a confession, zenyatta says - and then says it was his brother, whom he knows struggles with this kind of thing. it sounds like a confession in genji's mind, and he chuckles. ]
I am glad to hear that, master. I know he respects your opinion quite a bit.
[Zenyatta chuckles softly, imagining her- green, surely, like her master, like her sister, getting her nose into everything, chirruping tunefully at her new father.]
I would like that very much. You need only name a location.
