NAME: Genji Shimada
CANON: Overwatch
CANON POINT: Just after the Reflections comic
AGE: 35
BACKGROUND: Wiki
PERSONALITY:
Genji Shimada is someone who has learned to forgive, and to accept who he is.
As a child, he and his brother, Hanzo, were blessed with dragons that they could summon, which set them apart from other members of the Shimada clan. Genji had one, while Hanzo had two, as his elder brother. This laid upon them both a great expectation of responsibility. In his youth, he shirked his "obligations" to his crime family under a playboy attitude and the protection of his father. He dyed his hair, and spent many nights partying and not attending his training in favor of other pleasures.
He was sheltered from the true effects of the family's pressure by his father Sojiro, an act which ultimately drove a wedge between him and his brother. In the end, after his father's passing, his brother was forced into a position to 'deal with him', which turned into a nasty case of almost-fratricide that left Genji clinging to life, most of his left arm and lower legs destroyed.
This dramatically reshaped his personality, given that he was rescued from death by the peace-keeping organization Overwatch, and given a cyborg body to augment what he'd lost. Initially, he was resentful, holding a grudge against Hanzo, his family, and indeed, the world for what had happened to him. He channelled that rage and resentment into Overwatch, and especially Blackwatch, their covert black ops division, where many fell to his blade.
The time he spent here was shown with him at first as a sullen and angry individual, seeking the quickest kill. His closests friends were McCree, a Blackwatch recruit, and Angela Ziegler, the doctor overseeing his care, and he was quite brusque and rude to both of them. At times, he blamed Angela for his survival. Over time, he became disillusioned with his 'protecting' in Blackwatch and Overwatch.
Drifting and feeling he had no place in a human or omnic world, he left, still angry and unable to forgive or move on from what had happened to him. It was his encountering Zenyatta, the omnic Shambali monk, who convinced him to stay in Nepal, that he was able to being to reconcile his cyborg nature - as half man, half machine - and start truly healing. He was able to eventually speak with those friends he had made in Overwatch and apologize for his behaviour, and keeps in touch with them.
He went to confront his brother in their ancestral home many years later, still not sure if he would forgive or kill him, and ultimately chose to forgive him and asked Hanzo to move on from his death and see the world as it was now.
His ability to forgive is considered a weakness by some - but it was necessary in order to heal, and he has learned that forgiveness is not something you give others - it is something you do for yourself. It is worth noting that he still has something of a temper and an ability to nurse a grudge - things he is actively unlearning as habits.
He is still very playful. This hearkens back to his playboy days, mentioned above. He may no longer be the wild child of the Shimada clan, but his sense of humor has remained firmly in place. He still enjoys video games, acting shocked when he's told he no longer has the high scores in an arcade he's not visited for years. He teases that his halloween costume will be a "cyborg ninja", a joke he could not have made when he was younger about his place in life. He also has a habit of being a bit overconfident when challenging others in a fight or contests.
He has also become quite protective of people as a whole, as well as Omnics. He seeks to help both those he knows and those he sees as needing protection from those who would do harm. He views it as his responsibility with his abilities - and perhaps a way to make up for the death that he caused in his anger.
Genji knows no matter how big or small an action is, that it has a greater effect as it spreads out in the world. It is implied that he'd return to Overwatch if a recall was ever activated, wanting a chance to help do good in the world at large.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Ability link here! To break it down out of game terms, though: Genji has the ability to climb walls, as well as jump higher than normal (double-jump). He can throw shuriken that are stored within his cybernetic arm, and uses his wakazashi to deflect projectiles for a short time. It can even reflect object-based powerful attacks (like Hanzo's spirit dragons), but not objects with no tangibility (beam attacks, or Moira's "Coalescence"). This requires split second reaction time (try doing it in game; it's hard).
His super attack involves summoning his dragon, imbuing his body and katana with her energy. He is capable of causing massive damage and moving faster, as well as still reflecting attacks for a short time using his katana.
It does not gain him any regenerative abilities. His abilities are not nerfed in any capacity, but he won't be able to use his deflections unless I have player permission in the course of battle, and he won't be wantonly summoning his dragon in attack mode.
As a side note, the dragon will, when not summoned as part of an attack, be able to manifest at about the size of a small dog..
INVENTORY: 1. His katana, Ryū ichimonji
2. His Wakazashi
3. His dragon, which is part of his abilities. (He calls her Ramen)
4. A journal with an ink pen in which he keeps his thoughts
5. The photo of Hanzo and himself he keeps in Nepal
